Trick to Remember Discontinuities of Earth's Interior

To remember the six major discontinuities (Conrad, Mohorovičić, Repetti, Dahm, Gutenberg, Lehmann), you can use this mnemonic:

Mnemonic: "Cool Monkeys Run Down Green Lanes"

  • CConrad Discontinuity (Upper Crust – Lower Crust)
  • MMohorovičić (Moho) Discontinuity (Crust – Mantle)
  • RRepetti Discontinuity (Upper Mantle – Lower Mantle)
  • DDahm'' (Double Prime) Layer (Lower Mantle – Outer Core)
  • GGutenberg Discontinuity (Mantle – Outer Core)
  • LLehmann Discontinuity (Outer Core – Inner Core)

Quick Facts About Each:

  1. Conrad Discontinuity – Separates the upper and lower crust (found mainly in continental crust).
  2. Mohorovičić (Moho) Discontinuity – Separates crust from mantle, discovered by seismic wave velocity changes.
  3. Repetti Discontinuity – Found within the mantle, marking the upper mantle to lower mantle transition.
  4. Dahm Discontinuity– 2780 Km
  5. Gutenberg Discontinuity – Separates the mantle from the outer core, where seismic S-waves disappear, indicating a liquid outer core.
  6. Lehmann Discontinuity – Separates the outer core from the solid inner core, discovered by seismic wave reflections.
